What is Bursitis?
Bursitis is the irritation and inflammation of a sac of fluid called a bursa.
The bursa is a sac filled with lubricating fluid located between tissue such as muscle, tendons and bones. The bursa fills a space in the body to decrease friction, rubbing and irritation.
If the bursa becomes compressed or overloaded the bursa will enlarge causing it to rub on the structures around it. This causes irritation and inflammation leading to pain which we call bursitis!
Common symptoms of bursitis include:
🎄A visible lump/fluid build up, usually located close to a joint.
🎄 Pain often presents as a dull ache, with the pain increasing on movement of the area or as you touch the area.
🌲Restriction in movement is often seen when a bursa becomes problematic.
Knees, hips, shoulders and elbows are the most common areas where bursitis occurs.
